Outplaced until now

1 Squirrel Monkey to Odsherred Zoo, Denmark

BingaThe Squirrel Monkey Binga came from Germany, where she was kept as a pet. The owner abandoned her when he broke up with his girlfriend. Odsherred zoo in Denmark has already given various animals from AAP a new home. Like the 5 common genets we outplaced in december 2011. After her quarantine, Bing was brought to her new home bij one of her caregivers. Upon arrival, she was placed next to her congeners and meanwhile she is living together with a group of other Squirrel Monkeys.

4 Rhesus Macaques to Lakeview Monkey Sanctuary, England

This group of 4 Rhesus Macaques was living with AAP for quite some time. James had even been here since 1989; he was outplaced once before, but eventually had to return to AAP. Year after year we couldn't succeed in finding a new home for these elderly primates. Until finally Lakeview Monkey Sanctuary in England offered to take care of the foursome!

5 common genets to Odsherred Zoo, Danmark

One of the genets

Over the past years, AAP has already outplaced several animals to Odsherred Zoo. In October 2009 kinkajous Kinky and Mimiko moved to Danmark also. Early in 2011, AAP rescued 4 common genets and added an earlier rescued common genet to this group. Finding a new home for this small group of 2 males and 3 females was not so easy, but when Odsherred was approached, they were willing to offer these 5 animals (Dubi, Nayran, Zufar, Riyam en Andorra) a new home. The animals have been taken to their destination by Geert Jonkers (Outplacement Coordinator).

2 ring-tailed lemurs to De Zonnegloed, Belgium

ring-tailed lemurs

In the first months of this year, we had already outplaced a number of animals -raccoons and an arctic fox- into this animal park in Belgium, De Zonnegloed. In the process, we entered into a coalition to also home primates at their premises. Ring-tailed lemurs Merina and Masi are the last two animals originating from a zoo at the French island “Ile de la Réunion”, which had been closed three years ago. AAP had rescued animals from this park before, among which the chimpanzees Brigitta, Jeudi and Daza. De Zonnegloed has created new accommodation for these animals and both animals could be rehomed there straight from our quarantine quarters after their quarantine period had ended. Sandra Nijman, the regular caretaker of these animals at the AAP premises, has accompanied them on their way to Belgium.

8 crab-eating macaques to Karpin Abentura, Spain

3 of the crab-eating macaques

In the past years, we have outplaced 2 porcupines and more recently 2 dingo’s into this spacious, beautiful park in the north of Spain. The outplacement of this group of crab-eating macaques had been planned for a long time already, as we started this project in 2008. After a completely new accommodation had been built for these animals in Karpin, the date of transport had to be modified a number of times due to several different developments within the group.

1 caucasian squirrel to Zoo Halle, Germany

The outdoor enclosure in Halle Zoo

Daha, a female caucasian squirrel, came to AAP at the beginning of 2011, after being kept as a pet in a very small cage. We are very happy to have found a home for her in the zoo of Halle (Germany), where she could live together with another female. In 2006 we had outplaced a male and female - Urup and Elena - to Halle, and last year the male died of very old age. So Daha was supposed to be introduced to Elena. It is always up to the animals if this will actually work, and fortunately they got along fine!

2 dingos to Karpin Abentura, Spain

Biff and Ufi in Spain

Biff and Ufi, a male and a female, came to AAP early in 2010. Both animals came from a so-called 'care-grower' in the Netherlands, who stopped with his business for health reasons and asked for the AAP to take care of these two animals.

1 raccoon to De Zonnegloed, Belgium

Early 2011 AAP relocated four raccoons to the Belgian animal park De Zonnegloed. The plan was to add two animals more to this group. Two raccoons that had been captured by the nature centre Natuurhulpcentrum Opglabbeek in Belgium would be “mediated”by AAP and thus go directly from Opglabbeek to the zoo De Zonnegloed. Our employees accompanied the animals to assist with the integration into the existing group. For one of the raccoons this merging appeared to be "a bridge too far”. He is now stayed at AAP in Almere.

Prairie dog in Zoo Assin

Namid and Maka, two males, once privately owned, spent just over 6 months in our mammal department before moving to their new home in Zoo d’Asson in France. They have been delivered on-site by Geert Jonkers - 1 of the 2 Outplacement coordinators – during a prospect trip in France.

1 vison to Domaine de Pescheray, France

Bina had just spent a half year at AAP before she got a new home at the Domaine de Pescheray. She was moved there at the same time as the prairie dogs Namid and Maka. Unfortunately, replacing an animal is not always a successful event. Some ten days after her move, we heard the sad news that Bina was deceased. She was found dead in the area where she was being introduced to four other visons. Bina’s autopsy revealed that despite the best efforts in France, she died of a pulmonary embolism (a small piece of tissue blocked the blood flow to her lungs). Why this happened just now, unfortunately we will never know.

6 olive baboons to Lilongwe Wildlife Centre, Malawi

Bento is watching out over his new enclosure

Lilongwe Wildlife Centre is a rescue centre AAP has been working with for several years. In 2009 we outplaced a number of vervet monkeys to Lilongwe. A group of baboons was supposed to travel with them, but that fell through at the last minute as the group suddenly fell apart. Behavioural specialists and animal caretakers went back to work to form a new stable group, and thus, early April 2011, were we able to fly 6 baboons to Africa; Bento, Louis, Cira, Jacha, Tucan and Zusje.

1 common marmoset to Odsherred Zoo, Denmark

Gregory too was a member of the so called 'Dutch eleven' we took in during the summer of 2010. Odsherred Zoo has become an important outplacement partner over the past years as they already housed kinkajous Kinky and Mimiko, a red ruffed lemur and a red-bellied tamarin in their park.

4 Sugargliders to Antwerp Zoo, Belgium

Sugar glider and Night monkey

These sugar gliders were taken in by Natuurhulpcentrum Opglabbeek in Belgium. Not all animals on the intake schedule are transferred to AAP. Here is a good example of mediation; after their medical treatments, the sugar gliders were transferred from the NHC and directly outplaced with the Antwerp Zoo. The animals are currently residing in the rainforest enclosure of the zoo, accompanied by Night monkeys, Sloths, Egyptian Rousettes and a Flying fox.

1 common marmoset and 1 coati to Lagos Zoo, Portugal

Wesley was a member of the so-called 'Dutch eleven' we took in during the summer of 2010. We were looking for a new partner for him!

To Lagos Zoo we have relocated a fair number of animals like coatis and prairie dogs. In 2009, female coati Sandy moved to this Portuguese park, and, when after some time the male she lived with died, we decided to outplace male Onidin to them. This coati was taken in from Greece.

Both animals flew from Schiphol to Lisbon where Lagos Zoo’s manager picked them up.

1 lesser spot-nosed guenon to Zoo Rostock, Germany

Tania and her buddy Ronja eat together

Tania’s intake and relocation proved a difficult task. Starting her intake from Spain it was found that this vervet monkey suffers from a rare condition; Cushing’s Syndrome. Her life-expectancy was only a few months. We decided to leave Tania in peace and in Spain with an appreciated rescue partner. After six months, unexpectedly positive news; Tania was doing fine! Her condition was medically stabilized, her life-expectancy looked much better.

2 prairie dogs to Zoo Hof, Germany

Prairy dog in Zoo Hof

Prairie dog Ianus was handed over to Natuurhulpcentrum Opglabbeek in Belgium by a private owner and came to AAP in September 2009. Kempai too came to AAP via NHC in May 2010, after being found roaming the streets. An initial unison of both males was not successful. We decided to neuter the animals to diminish aggression. Fortunately the animals got along fine after that. On 18th March an Outplacement colleague delivered them at their new address, Zoo Hof in Germany, where they joined a few females in a beautiful, new enclosure. Here they can dig to their hearts’ content and live like a prairie dog should.
