Degu

The degu is a South American rodent, related to the guinea-pig and the chinchilla. Degus originate from the scarcely vegetated slopes of the Andes: Rocky domains with some shrubbery.

The last years the degu has become a popular domestic animal, that is even sold by garden centres. The buyers rarely realise that they have chosen an animal that adapts badly to new circumstances, such as another climate and unknown food. The digestive system of degus is geared to a frugal diet with optimal use of all nutrients. A rich menu is completely wrong for them: The animals absorbs a surplus of vitamins and minerals.

Many purchasers are not aware of the fact that degus cannot endure sugar. They spoil their animals with bits of fruit, which results in diabetes and premature death.

Degus are no cuddly animals, they never become as tame as guinea-pigs. Their need to sleep in burrows brings them to dig through each possible material or piece of furniture, such as couches and chairs. To keep their teeth short gnawing is a prerequisite, which causes further damage to the furnishings.
