Nine primates to Primadomus

News - News  |  Monday, 01 November 2010

Now that the second enclosure for primates in Primadomus is completely finished and everything has been made ready for their arrival, the new habitant-to-be were allowed to commence their journey to AAP's Spanish shelter. Early this morning there was an unusual buzz in misty Almere, because the nine travellers were to leave around noon. And as usual we weren't sure whether all of them would be willing to enter their transportation boxes... But to our surprise the animals cooperated very well.

Pigtail Macaque LazarosThe Hamadryas Baboons Diallo, Rastan, Michi, Einstein and Anando were all inside their boxes within fifteen minutes and the caregivers didn't have much trouble with Pigtail Macaques Glenn and Calimero either. Only their group mates Lazaros and Ino were not to pleased about their tight accommodation... With some persuasion the caregivers succeeded in getting them in there anyway.

The enclosure that will be the primates' new home, is a mirror image of the enclosure were the chimpanzees of Patrick's group have been living for the past year. There are five huge indoor enclosures, both groups will be using two of them. The outdoor enclosure, with its 60.000 square feet, differs slightly from the chimpanzee enclosure, because it is split up in three enclosure of 30.000, 20.000 and 10.000 square feet. The smallest, including the adjacent indoor enclosure, will probably be used for Barbary Macaques that are confiscated in Spain.

Splendid

When the animals reach their destination tomorrow, it will be around 18 to 20 degrees Celcius. A wonderful start in their new country of residence! Especially for Lazaros, since warmth will be good for his arthrosis. Lately we have seem some increasing stiffness with him. But of course all animals will very much enjoy the space, the climate and the tranquility in the splendid hills of Primadomus.
