Barbary macaque campaign: great success despite of counteractions

In the blistering heat of South-Spain some of our colleagues and volunteers had a tough job to do. Despite of counteractions of the Algeciras harbor police, they managed to hand out thousands of flyers and sun blinds for windshields to the tourists leaving for Morocco, as this is the harbor all the ferries to Morocco leave from.

Free aid for raccoons

Less then two months after the arrival of the raccoons Towa and Tutelo, last week AAP again welcomed a raccoon from Cyprus. Thanks to the effort of the Cypriot animal welfare organisation, Animal Responsibility Cyprus (ARC), and especially the driven chairman, Kyriacos Kyriacou, this still nameless orphan was quickly equipped with the necessary health and travel documents.

The way up North

Skunk TobagoLast weekend nine larger mammals of AAP began a journey to their new home in Denmark. The safari park Ree Park Ebeltoft Safari , prepared a beautiful enclosure for our six raccoons and three skunks in the North-America part of the park.

In a last attempt to save the Moroccan Barbary Macaque from extinction, Dutch animal rescue organisation AAP has started a campaign aimed at tourists travelling to Morocco this summer. By handing out cardboard sunscreens with a heartbreaking photograph of a baby monkey and an appeal not to buy Barbary macaques, AAP hopes to raise awareness amongst travellers and put an end to the smuggling of these threatened animals.

Barbary macaque saved by AAP Primadomus

Barbary macaque Izan

On Friday, June 19th, AAP Primadomus saved its first barbary macaque in Alicante. It was a male named Izan and was approximately two years old. The animal lived with its owner. He picked it up from a petrol station, when it was still a baby and has cared for it ever since.

On Monday 31st of May no less than 24 barbary macaques moved to new homes in France. It is a record for AAP: never have so many animals been moved to a new home in one go. Rizzlys group of 17 is the largest, and they went to Zoo de Jurques in Normandy. AAP has a structural waiting list for barbary macaques and these are the animals which are most often rescued. This large outplacement is an important success for AAP.

Two raccoons rescued from Cyprus

Raccoon from cyprusA five year old female raccoon and a five year old male raccoon arrived at AAP today after being rescued from the zoos of Limassol and Larnaca in Cyprus. They were named Towa (the female) and Tutelo. Both raccoons were housed solitary for years and kept in unsuitable conditions. Thanks to the organisation Animal Responsibility Cyprus (ARC) both animals were signed over to AAP and were put on a direct flight from Larnaca to Amsterdam.

A new future

marmoset

Within less than a month ten inhabitants have swopped the mammal department for a permanent home.

The two white eared marmosets, Ibero and Cerrada have moved to the German Metelen Zooa park with an enthusiastic (Dutch) owner who appreciates the work which is done by AAP. In 2007 ten raccoons found a good home there and in 2009 the two koatis Ben and Boody were offered a run of 1000m2 plus the good company of four ladies. In Metelen, Ibero and Cerrada have their own wonderful enclosure.
