Chimpanzees leave Almere for new AAP-home in Spain

Donkey at AAP

Almere/Villena, 27 October 2009 – Ten chimpanzees in the care of the Dutch foundation AAP, are to be moved to Spain on November 2 2009.

The chimps, belonging to ‘Donkey’s group’, have lived at AAP’s rescue centre in Almere, the Netherlands, for several years. Now however, they can look forward to a new home in Primadomus, our new rescue centre near the city of Villena in Spain. Primadomus will serve as a lifetime care centre for abused primates that are taken in by AAP and cannot be outplaced in renowned zoos or animal parks. In time, more animals will follow Donkey’s group and enjoy the peace and space that this beautiful centre has to offer.

AAP rescues a lion

Mufasa, still at Depana

Mufasa, a lion of about eight months old arrived during the night of 8/9 September at Stichting AAP in Almere. This is the first time that AAP has rescued a lion, however, it was an emergency. In the Spanish rescue centre Depana, which is a regular partner of AAP, Mufasa was quickly getting to big for his enclosure, and within our network of rescue centres there was at that moment no alternative address.

Escape Artist Kuruk and his friend Eno find a new home in Belgium

Raccoon enclosure in Planckendaell

Once again we have found refuge for two raccoons in the sister organization of Antwerp Zoo, Planckendael, in Melchelen which lies between Antwerp and Brussels.

In contrast to Antwerp zoo which lies in the heart of the city and therefore has to struggle with its limited space, Planckendael has enough room for larger enclosures for larger groups of animals.

New home for seven animals from AAP

Wallaby Rufo

Since Monday the 10th August, a wallaby, two Japanese squirrels and four degus which had been living at AAP, have a new home. Childrens Play Paradise '‘t Krekeltje' (the little cricket) in Eede in the south of Zeeland, has built new enclosures which conform to the high standards required by Stichting AAP, especially for these animals. Because of this re-housing we now have room at AAP for other animals waiting to be rescued.

Seasons first young Barbary macaque arrives at Stichting AAP

Barbary Macaque Qibla

On Tuesday the 4th of August the first young Barbary macaque of the summer holiday season was brought in to Stichting AAP in Almere. The little male monkey, who is now called Qibla, is probably only two months old. The tiny animal was bought by tourists on the market in Morocco, where they were assured he would always stay so small. In a short space of time the owners soon discovered that such an animal is not a suitable pet.

Five Barbary Macaques move to England

Nancy

Unexpectedly we got the word that five Barbary macaques could cross the Channel. Of course we had been trying for some time to eventually, …possibly, …probably …send the five to Wingham Wildlife Park near Canterbury, but because of the English quarantine regulations we didn’t know when it would happen. Suddenly we got the green light and then it was all systems go.

Rewarding work behind the scenes

Peluczio

Not every rescued animal is actually brought to Almere. As soon as an animal has been offered for rescue a whole protocol is set in action. Step for step all the facts are checked, what kind of animal is it, when is there a place free for this animal in our quarantine, how long would it have to stay in quarantine, is the situation acute or can the animal stay where it is for the time being. Is it possible to find a temporary shelter address for the animal? And maybe most important , is there direct interest from zoos or reserves in offering this animal a permanent home.
