Blog: Nursing home for the blind Minou?

Moussa and Minou

Everybody wants to live long and grow old, but nobody wants to be old. For, as we all know, old age is sickness of itself. Understandably, the cuts in health care have been a popular conversation subject lately. The current gouvernment has recently reached an agreement on the future of health care. The ever rising costs for longterm care must be reigned in by taking care of the people at home instead of in a nursing home.

AAP Summer Course 2013: husbandry of rescued primates

Barbary macaque

AAP, Rescue Centre for Exotic Animals in the Netherlands, organises once again, after two very successful courses, the Summer Course “Husbandry of rescued primates” in August.

This course covers the processes that are needed to resocialise and rehome traumatised, exotic animals in a rescue centre such as AAP. Different subjects will be addressed varying from policy issues, prevention, veterinary care (capturing, handling, prevention and treatment of diseases) and behavioural care (observations, enrichment, reducing abnormal behaviour and resocialise the animal so it is able to live in a group with conspecifics). These subjects and much more will all be addressed during this unique course from 26th to 30th of August 2013 at AAP, Rescue Centre for Exotic Animals.

Squirrel 'Valentine' off to AAP on Valentine's Day

Squirrel Valentine

On Valentine's Day AAP took in an exotic squirrel (exact species yet unknown). Given the arrival date, he (or she) was named 'Valentine'. Valentine was caught in Rijswijk, by the Dierenambulance (Animal Ambulance) The Hague. The squirrel had been bitten and chased by a dog, before fleeing up a tree to escape. An employee of the Dierenambulance climbed after him and managed to catch him. An initial check by our vet Hester pointed out that Valentine has no visible wounds or fractures. However, Valentine is quite fat and still a little shocked due to his adventure.

Blog: Baboon 'beats' Chimpanzee...(with stick)

Baboon using a stick

In the 1960’s Jane Goodall discovered that man was not the only species that made and used tools. Until then the use of tools was considered a human characteristic and the discovery brought a huge discussion. Should the definition of tool use or mankind be revised or should the chimpanzees be recognized as humans?

Press Release: Chimpanzee stuck on Canary Islands for 22 years

Macario still on Gran Canaria

AAP rescues chimpanzee from fate as lonely pet on Gran Canaria

On December 16th 2012, AAP welcomed a new chimpanzee to the rescue centre: 22-year-old Macario. No older than four months, Macario was taken from his mother in a Senegalese Zoo, to be sold to a Spanish family on Gran Canaria. For years, he ate and slept alongside the children of the family, until he matured and did no longer behave as an ‘ape-child’. He was locked in a cage at an abandoned site, without any form of enrichment or distraction. Because of this, he developed severe stereotypic behaviour.

Blog: Fritz says 'no!'

Unyoro

“I want it mummy, mummy, can I have it, mummy, mummy, mummieeeee?” Mummy is busy twittering or facebooking on her smartphone, looks up distractedly to say no and twitters happily further. The little girl doesn’t give up and starts to cry. “But I really really want the panda”. “Lisa, I said no”. Later I see Lisa with a tearful face walking out of the zoo, triumphantly holding the cuddly toy panda. Mission accomplished!
